Luxury Suvs

Luxury sport-utility vehicles (“SUVs”) have become hottest class in the SUV marketplace.  While there is some overlap in the categories between mid-size, full-size, and luxury SUVs, there are now about 50 luxury SUV models for buyers to choose from.  The luxury class offers more models than any other SUV category.

Prices in the luxury SUV class range from about $40,000 to over $100,000.  Automakers competing in the segment include: Acura, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Saab, and Volvo.  Many of these models have cutting edge technology both inside and outside the cabin.  Glass moon roofs, navigation systems, and premium sound systems are features commonly found in this class.

Luxury SUV models offer either a V-6 or V-8 engine, with several models offering engines with more than 400 horsepower.  Luxury SUVs typically have third row seating for up to eight passengers but some models offer only a five-passenger configuration.

While more horsepower is attractive to many buyers, several makers also offer more fuel-efficient engine choices.  BMW, Cadillac, Lexus, and Mercedes offer hybrid luxury SUV models, which can get mileage in the mid 20s per gallon.  Mercedes Benz offers an efficient and powerful diesel engine it its R350 model as does Volkswagen in the Touraeg.

A new trend in the luxury SUV segment is models that combine an SUV structure with a coupe design.  This design is seen in 2010 models such as the all new Acura ZDX and BMW X6.  These models combine handsome coupe-like styling with the functionality and versatility of an SUV.
